Trump Expands 50% Steel and Aluminum Tariffs to 400+ Additional Products

The Trump administration has broadened its 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to cover 407 new product categories, significantly widening the scope of its trade measures. The expanded levies took effect Monday, according to the Department of Commerce.

The new list, which includes products such as fire extinguishers, machinery parts, construction materials, auto components, and specialty chemicals, greatly extends the tariffs’ reach beyond raw metals. Experts say the move marks a more aggressive attempt to close loopholes and prevent circumvention of earlier trade measures.

“This isn’t just another tariff—it’s a strategic shift in how steel and aluminum derivatives are regulated,” said Brian Baldwin, vice president of customs at Kuehne + Nagel International AG.

Commerce officials said the expansion supports the “revitalization” of U.S. steel and aluminum industries, but analysts warn the economic impact could be significant. Jason Miller, professor of supply chain management at Michigan State University, estimates the tariffs now affect at least $320 billion worth of imports, up sharply from a previous $190 billion estimate. He noted the expanded levies could add further inflationary pressures to already rising producer prices.

The move follows Trump’s June decision to double tariffs on most steel and aluminum imports to 50%. While the White House said the broader coverage was expected under a new product inclusion process launched earlier this year, the announcement adds fresh uncertainty for manufacturers and U.S. trading partners reliant on these materials.
